This self initiated project had the
dining table as a theme. In this project I worked with the social values the dining table has in a private home, where the table is a gathering point for
conversation, communication and
understanding.
I chose to transfer these concepts to the design of the table and the associated bench. The bench has an important role in the intimacy of the table, while the seating position is a sound ergonomic seating position, as one is forced to change position more frequently.
I worked with reading and understanding the principles of the construction of the bench. To achieve a deep understanding between the design, and the viewer, I wanted to make a strong but easily understandable structure. To emphasize the difference between the legs and stretchers of the table and bench, I chose to work with contrasts in two different materials, in two different line courses. The tree is thus all vertical structures, while the powder-coated metal, forms the table and bench’s, horizontal frame and stretchers. The tabletop and seat, are made of a 21 mm plywood with linoleum, while the frame is of pine and 8mm wire.
